Ijaw Elders Seek Justice for Slain Officers, Safety of Innocent Residents in Okuama Massacre

The Lagos branch of the Ijaw Elders Forum (IEF) has voiced concerns over the recent developments in the aftermath of the killing of 17 military personnel at Okuama in Delta State and the ongoing military crackdown in search of the perpetrators.

The forum condemned the attack on military personnel, demanding the isolation and apprehension of those responsible to face the law.

In a statement issued by Chief Bukazi Etete, Chairman, and Mr Efiye Bribena, Secretary, the IEF called for a thorough investigation and swift, equitable justice for the perpetrators of the attack.

However, the forum also expressed dismay over the alleged invasion and destruction of lives and properties in Okuama and Igbomatoru, Bayelsa State, by the military.

It urged the authorities to investigate and bring to justice all those responsible for the killings and destruction in both communities.

The elders emphasized the military’s constitutional role in protecting citizens, urging respect for the rules of engagement when dealing with civilians.

They called for a thorough investigation into the immediate and remote causes of the death of the military personnel at Okuama and other communities, including any collateral damages that followed the unfortunate incident.

As the situation in Okuama and Igbomatoru continues to unfold, the Ijaw Elders Forum remains committed to advocating for justice and the safety of innocent residents caught in the conflict.

The forum’s demands reflect a broader call for accountability and adherence to the rule of law during military operations in civilian areas.
