House of Representatives Urges NAFDAC to Lift Ban on Sachet Alcohol

The House of Representatives has called upon the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to abide by its resolution and lift the ban on sachet alcohol and pet bottle.

This decision comes amidst concerns about the current economic climate and its impact on the citizens of Nigeria.

Rep. Regina Akume, Chairman of the House Committee on NAFDAC, emphasized that the timing of the ban is inappropriate given the current state of the economy.

With the unemployment rate at a staggering level, inflation soaring, and poverty levels on the rise, the House of Representatives believes that the ban would only exacerbate these issues.

The scarcity of FOREX to conduct business further complicates the situation.

Instead of the ban, the House of Representatives has proposed alternative measures to regulate the sale and consumption of these products.

These include the establishment of licensed liquor stores and outlets in Local Government Areas (LGAs) across the country, making it unlawful for underage individuals to purchase alcoholic beverages, and increased monitoring and compliance checks by NAFDAC, FCCPC, and other relevant agencies.

To promote a greener economy, the House also suggested a focus on recycling the materials used to produce these pet bottles and sachets.

This would help reduce the need for importing raw materials and conserve the scarce FOREX.

The House of Representatives has described the ban as being in contradiction with the spirit and letter of the Constitution and the current administration’s Economic Recovery Plan.

They believe that the ban would result in job losses and further economic hardship for the Nigerian people.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen if NAFDAC will comply with the House of Representatives’ resolution and lift the ban on sachet alcohol and pet bottles.

In the meantime, the debate on the potential consequences of such a ban continues to be a topic of interest for both the government and the public.
