Gunshots In Kwara As Students Protest NDLEA, EFCC Raids

Students of Kwara State University, Malete, have taken to the streets to protest the persistent raids by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over drug and cyber fraud-related activities.

The situation escalated when a policeman was injured during the protest, leading to gunshots and teargas being fired at the students.

The incident, which occurred on February 23, 2024, has been widely shared on social media platforms. According to a tweet from an X user (@babyygirlfl0), “EFCC came to raid in the middle of the night, two days ago, and arrested over 30 students.

NDLEA came in today to do the same.

Students tried to stop them, but they joined forces with the police and started throwing teargas at students.

They even started shooting guns, as I saw with my own eyes.”

The unrest has caused concern among the students and staff of the university, prompting the management to issue a statement confirming the development and urging all students and staff to remain calm and lawful.

The statement also confirmed that no one was shot and no lives were lost in the unrest.

The Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Toun Ejire-Adeyemi, confirmed that a policeman was injured in the melee and stated that the students attacked police stations in the community, destroyed valuable property, and injured policemen.

The situation has led to calls for dialogue between the university management, the NDLEA, and the EFCC to address the grievances of the students and prevent further unrest.
