Governor Ododo Initiates N29bn Erosion Control Project in Kogi State

Governor of Kogi State, Usman Ododo, has initiated a significant step towards addressing the devastating effects of gully erosion in the state by signing a contract worth N29.929 billion for the commencement of gully reclamation, stabilization, and channellisation in three major sites across the state.

The project, funded by the state in partnership with the World Bank ACReSAL Project, aims to bring relief to the affected communities in Okene, Kabba, and Ankpa, and improve the overall environmental conditions in the state.

The contract, which covers Etahi in Okene, Omigbo in Kabba, and Olubojo in Ankpa, will see the implementation of comprehensive measures to tackle the menace of gully erosion and its consequences.

The breakdown of the contract reveals that Etahi site will receive N10, 664,612,410.46, Omigbo site will receive N9, 866,807,044.00, and the contract for the Ankpa site stands at N9, 397,037,897.69.

Governor Ododo, represented by Engr. Joseph Oluwasegun Stephen, the commissioner for environment and ecological management, emphasized the importance of the project in addressing the pressing issue of erosion in the state.

He urged the contractors to handle the assignment with utmost seriousness and ensure that the work is executed to the highest standards.

The governor also called for collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure the project’s success and safeguard the communities affected by erosion.

The governor acknowledged the efforts of the state project coordinator of ACReSAL, Barr. Ladi Ahmed Jatto, and her team for their work in bringing the project to fruition.

He expressed his confidence in the contractors’ ability to deploy the necessary resources to deliver quality work that meets global standards.

The project is expected to bring significant relief to the communities of intervention, which have suffered greatly from the devastating effects of gully erosion.

The initiative not only aims to protect lives and properties but also to improve the overall environmental conditions in the state.

The signing of the contract marks a critical milestone in the state’s efforts to combat the challenges posed by erosion and underscores the government’s commitment to promoting sustainable development and community welfare.
