Gov. Otu Suspends Cross River State Assembly Commission for Misleading Advice, Sacks Appointee

“Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has suspended the state House of Assembly Commission for providing misleading advice regarding the appointment of the Clerk of the House.

The suspension was announced on March 18, 2024, in a letter signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Anthony Owan Enoh, and read on the floor of the Assembly by Speaker Elvert Ayambem.

The governor stated that the commission failed to reveal the correct seniority order of eligible staff members for the position of Clerk of the Cross River State House of Assembly.

As a result, Mr. Patrick Edi was appointed over Mrs. Catherine Ubi, causing a ripple effect.

In response to the situation, Governor Otu has approved the appointment of Catherine Ubi as the substantive clerk of the Cross River State House of Assembly. Furthermore, Mr. Patrick Edi has been sacked from the position.

This decision was made to rectify the error in the appointment process and ensure that the correct seniority order is followed.

It also serves as a reminder of the importance of accurate information and transparency in the appointment process.

The suspension of the Assembly Commission and the subsequent sacking and appointment of the Clerk of the House demonstrate Governor Otu’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the Cross River State government.

It is a clear message that misleading advice and improper appointments will not be tolerated.
