Gov Buni Highlights Porous Borders as Key Factor in Nigeria’s Insecurity

The Governor of Yobe State, Mai Buni, has identified unmanned borders as a major factor contributing to the increasing insecurity in Nigeria.

He made this observation during a meeting with the newly deployed Assistant Controller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service in charge of Zone ‘C’, James Sunday, at the Government House, Damaturum on Thursday.

According to Governor Buni, the lack of border patrol in Nigeria has made it easy for foreigners to illegally migrate into the country, fueling various criminal activities such as terrorism, kidnappings, banditry, and farmers/herders conflict.

He emphasized the need for Nigeria to take border control seriously, citing its importance in American politics as an example.

The Emir of Damaturu, Shehu El-kanemi, commended the Nigeria Immigration Service for its efforts in fishing out foreigners, especially during the peak of insurgencies in the country.

He stressed the importance of peace for development and progress and called for a beef up in the security architecture in the state.

Assistant Controller General James Sunday, in his remarks, called for the establishment of joint operations with the military and police to tackle the challenges faced along the international borders in the North-East.

He emphasized the need for collaboration with sister security outfits to address the issue effectively.

The deployment of the officers in charge of Zone ‘C’ is expected to create more synergy with other security agencies to address the issue of porous borders and the subsequent security challenges faced by Nigeria.
