Police in Ondo State have begun investigating the death of a first-year FUTA student found outside campus. Favour Olaniyi, who studied Surveying and Geoinformatics, was discovered near his off-campus home on Saturday, May 9, 2026.

Adegbenro Adebanjo, FUTA's Corporate Communication and Protocol Director, confirmed the death in a statement released Sunday in Akure. He said university management alerted police immediately after learning of the incident.

Campus medical officials and security personnel worked together to move the body to a morgue. Police officers were dispatched to the scene to begin their investigations.

Officials have already notified Olaniyi's parents about what happened. FUTA management pledged full cooperation with ongoing police inquiries.

University counselors are now supporting students affected by the tragedy. Student affairs officials encouraged those struggling to access support services available on campus.

Detectives visited the discovery site along FUTA North Gate on May 9. According to Ondo State Police Command spokesperson Abayomi Jimoh, investigators found no obvious signs of violence on the body.

However, officers recovered a bottle at the scene. The bottle allegedly contained a poisonous substance, Jimoh noted.

Medical personnel transported the remains to a morgue for safekeeping and examination. Jimoh called on young people especially to reach out for professional help during challenging times.

He also urged the public to support loved ones facing difficulties. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the exact cause of death.
