Fruit Prices Surge in Kano Markets as Ramadan Fast Demand Increases

Fruit prices in Kano have skyrocketed due to increased demand during the ongoing Ramadan fast, according to a recent report.

A visit to the Yankaba and Yanlemu markets in the metropolis revealed that prices of fruits and other food items have risen significantly in the last four days.

An apple now sells for ₦450 as opposed to its previous price of ₦300.

Medium-sized watermelons are now priced at ₦1,500, a considerable increase from their previous cost of ₦700.

Large watermelons now sell for ₦3,000, up from ₦1,700. A dozen oranges now cost ₦1,000, while a bunch of bananas is priced at ₦2,000.

The price of fruits isn’t the only thing that has gone up; 50 kg bags of locally milled rice are now selling at ₦62,000, and sugar has surpassed ₦82,000 for a 100 kg bag.

Millet has also seen a rise in price, with a 100 kg bag now selling for ₦61,000. A crate of eggs has increased to over ₦3,200.

Traders at the market attribute the price hike to the increased demand for fruits and vegetables during Ramadan, as well as the rising cost of transportation and unfavorable business conditions.

Buyers like Muhammad Bala are concerned that the high cost of food items will prevent many households from enjoying decent post-fasting meals.

As Ramadan continues, it remains to be seen whether the prices of fruits and other food items will stabilize or continue to rise in the Kano markets.
