Former NLC Vice President Criticizes Joe Ajaero’s Demand for N450,000 Minimum Wage

A former National Vice President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Isa Tijjani, has spoken out against the current NLC president, Joe Ajaero, accusing him of deviating from the union’s primary role of protecting the rights of Nigerian citizens.

Tijjani expressed concern that Ajaero’s excessive strike actions and demands could plunge the country into economic and political crises.

Tijjani argued that the bargaining power of the union cannot always be at 100 per cent and criticized Ajaero’s demand for a minimum wage of N450,000, stating that it was unrealistic given the financial constraints faced by Nigeria’s states and local governments.

He also questioned the NLC’s integrity under Ajaero’s leadership, suggesting that the union has lost sight of its main objectives.

The former NLC Vice President also pointed out that the government is making efforts to address the issues raised by the NLC, yet Ajaero continues to insist on strike actions and protests.

He claimed that this demonstrates a lack of concern for the well-being of the country.

As the debate around the minimum wage and the NLC’s actions continues, it remains to be seen how the government and the union will work together to find a solution that addresses the needs of workers while also taking into account the financial realities of Nigeria’s states and local governments.
