FIFA has launched a disciplinary probe into ugly scenes that erupted after the 2026 World Cup final between Argentina and Spain. Ferran Torres scored the winning goal in the 106th minute to seal victory for Spain.
The trouble started earlier when referee Slavko Vincic sent off Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernández in the 90th minute for a foul on Pau Cubarsí. After the final whistle, video footage showed Argentina players Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina attacking Spain's Eric García and Rodri.
Argentina coach Roberto Ayala was also captured on camera striking Spain midfielder Dani Olmo during the melee. The governing body moved swiftly to address the incident.
In a statement, FIFA said it had assessed match reports and appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to examine potential breaches of the Disciplinary Code. The investigation focuses on the post-match disorder involving both teams.
"Further details will be communicated by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee once the prosecutor's report has been completed," the statement noted. The committee didn't specify what punishments the players and coach might face.
The incident marred what should have been Spain's moment of glory on football's grandest stage. It remains unclear whether players will face bans or fines when FIFA concludes its investigation.
