FG Establishes Mines Marshal to Combat Illegal Mining and Theft in Nigeria

The Federal Government of Nigeria has recently established a Mines Marshal to combat illegal mining and theft of the country’s mineral resources.

This move is in line with a key aspect of the government’s 7-point agenda, which aims to create a new security architecture for securing mining sites.

The Mines Marshal, consisting of 2,200 operatives drawn from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), was formally received by the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development (MSMD) during a recent event.

The launch of the first batch of this security apparatus is a crucial step in ensuring that the country can reap maximum benefits from its God-given resources.

In each state and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), an initial deployment of 60 operatives will be made.

The Mines Marshal will also include special operatives from other security agencies, with a focus on technological advancements to enhance their effectiveness.

The new security outfit will be managed by the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, with support from the Ministry of Interior.

This collaboration between the two ministries is a testament to the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the mining sector and ensuring that Nigeria can fully benefit from its vast mineral resources.

As the Mines Marshal begins its operations, the government’s efforts to combat illegal mining and theft are expected to yield positive results, ultimately contributing to the growth and development of Nigeria’s mining sector.
