Enrico Galliera has stepped down as Ferrari's chief marketing and commercial officer after 16 years in the role. His departure comes weeks after a fierce public backlash over the automaker's maiden electric vehicle, the Luce.

Ferrari announced the change this week. Massimiliano Di Silvestre, who previously headed BMW Italy, will take over the position in July.

Galliera's responsibilities included determining which clients could acquire Ferrari's coveted vehicles. Since 2010, he'd been instrumental in orchestrating the company's major product launches and brand initiatives.

In a statement, Ferrari credited Galliera with significant contributions to the firm's expansion. Chief executive Benedetto Vigna said he decided some time ago to pursue a new professional direction.

The Luce became a lightning rod for criticism when unveiled in May. Design chief Sir Jony Ive, famous for creating the iPhone, led the styling effort.

Italy's deputy prime minister and transport minister Matteo Salvini attacked the car's appearance. Salvini, who once chaired Ferrari, joined a chorus of detractors on social media.

The $640,000 electric model sparked countless internet memes and ridicule online. Its launch triggered an 8 percent drop in the company's share price the following day.

Ferrari had previously launched the LaFerrari, its first production hybrid hypercar, in 2013. That vehicle combined a traditional petrol engine with electric motor technology.

The Italian luxury brand went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 2015. It listed in Milan the following year.

Vigna praised Galliera's role in strengthening Ferrari's global brand reputation. "He has the gratitude of the entire Ferrari team," Vigna noted, adding personal best wishes for his future.

Galliera offered no additional remarks beyond Ferrari's official statement about his departure.
