Enzo Fernandez has defended Argentina's conduct at the World Cup, insisting the squad comported themselves with honour despite a troubled tournament that ended in defeat. The Chelsea midfielder was sent off for a second yellow card after a challenge on Spain's Pau Cubarsi late in Sunday's 1-0 final loss.
Argentina's campaign was marked by several unsavoury moments that drew criticism from football authorities. Leandro Paredes appeared to throw punches at Spanish players during their medal celebrations, prompting FIFA to launch an investigation into possible breaches of disciplinary rules.
The squad also turned their backs on Spain when the Spanish collected their medals and lifted the trophy. After their semi-final victory over England, Argentine players unfurled a banner reading "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" – a reference to the Falkland Islands dispute dating back to the 1982 invasion that Britain reversed through military force.
Fernandez took to Instagram to address his nation's performance without mentioning his dismissal. "As time goes by, you realise there is something much bigger than just a result," he wrote.
"For years, this group has represented the team in the best possible way. It teaches that competing isn't just about winning; it's about giving your all for the jersey and never giving up," the 25-year-old added.
Fernandez was part of Argentina's 2022 World Cup winning squad in Qatar, but his hopes of claiming a second consecutive title collapsed when Spain scored through Ferran Torres in the 106th minute. Argentina's defensive approach proved controversial throughout the final.
"It has been a privilege to be part of a group that always stepped up, competed at the highest level, and defended these colours with pride, humility, and commitment," Fernandez said. He thanked supporters for their backing across the tournament.
"Wearing my country's jersey is the greatest honour of my career, and I will continue to give my all every time I get to defend it," he concluded.
Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez signalled he may retire from international football following the defeat. The Aston Villa custodian, who lifted the World Cup in 2022, reflected on the loss in an Instagram post of his own.
"I dreamed of winning it again; I dreamed of bringing it back to Argentina and making history once more," the 33-year-old wrote. "Honestly, the pain is hard to put into words."
Martinez indicated he would take time to consider his next move. "Now I have to reflect on many things, see how to move forward, and decide if it's time to step aside," he said.
"I am truly sorry. I gave it my all to help my country and my team-mates," he added.
