Federal Lawmaker Ugochinyere Urges President Tinubu to Discontinue Kanu’s Trial for Peace in Southeast Nigeria

Federal lawmaker representing Ideato North/South federal constituency of Imo State, Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, urged for the discontinuation of the trial of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Ugochinyere’s call for Kanu’s release is aimed at fostering peace and reconciliation in the Southeast region of Nigeria.

Ugochinyere, who is also the Spokesperson for opposition coalition lawmakers in the National Assembly, emphasized the significance of Kanu’s release in the healing process and the restoration of peace in the Southeast.

He argued that Kanu has been detained for an extended period, despite being granted bail by a reputable court of law in Nigeria.

The lawmaker expressed optimism that the Tinubu administration would prioritize equal rights, justice, and fairness for all, regardless of tribe, political affiliation, or religious belief.

He highlighted that the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu would pave the way for general reconciliation and the resolution of all issues that led to the security challenges in the Southeast.

Ugochinyere appealed to President Tinubu to invoke the constitutional provisions of Section 174, which grants the President the power to discontinue any criminal prosecution.

He believes that issuing a Nolle Prosequi to dismiss the trial of Kanu would be a crucial step in creating an atmosphere conducive to resolving all outstanding issues and restoring peace in the region.

This development underscores the importance of addressing the root causes of security challenges in the Southeast and fostering an environment of reconciliation and unity in Nigeria.

As President Tinubu’s administration takes shape, the focus on justice, equity, and fairness will be crucial in shaping the country’s future and ensuring lasting peace and stability.
