President Bola Tinubu hailed elder statesman Reuben Fasoranti as a beacon of courage and justice. Speaking through Vice President Kashim Shettima at Fasoranti's centenary celebration, Tinubu praised the Afenifere leader's unwavering dedication to Nigeria's development.
The event drew Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and other senior Nigerian figures. It marked a significant milestone for the influential political and social commentator.
According to the President, Fasoranti's life embodies "the courage of prophets, the patience of teachers, the sacrifices of patriots, and the dignity of elders." Tinubu stressed that the centenarian's impact extends far beyond reaching 100 years of age.
Fasoranti actively shaped Nigeria's history rather than merely witnessing it from the sidelines. In Tinubu's view, this distinction separates genuine leaders from passive observers of national events.
Tinubu expressed concern about a troubling trend in public service across Nigeria. He said too many public officials prioritise personal interests over the welfare of citizens they're meant to serve.
"When power begets compassion, the weak are abandoned to the cold margins of society," the President noted. His words underscored how corruption and self-serving leadership leave vulnerable populations unprotected and marginalised.
Fasoranti's approach differed markedly from this pattern, Tinubu pointed out. Throughout his life, the Afenifere chieftain consistently championed the underrepresented and placed national interests first.
Tinubu credited Fasoranti with witnessing Nigeria's entire modern journey. From colonial times through independence, military rule, and democratic transitions, Fasoranti remained an engaged voice for justice.
The centenarian earned respect across generations through his steadfast commitment to democracy and fairness. His advocacy for marginalised voices became his defining characteristic over decades of public life.
Tinubu emphasised that Fasoranti didn't wait for safer times to speak truth. Instead, he chose principle over comfort, often bearing personal costs for his principled stands.
Such leadership exemplifies what Tinubu believes Nigeria needs at all levels of governance. The President's tribute underscored how Fasoranti's legacy offers lessons for contemporary public servants navigating their own moral choices.
