Enugu State Government and FAAN Collaborate on Airport Infrastructure Upgrade

The partnership between the Enugu State Government and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is set to bring significant infrastructural upgrades to the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.
This collaboration aims to complete the international wing, construct a cargo terminal, and build warehouses to enhance the airport’s operational capabilities and boost the region’s economic growth.
During a recent meeting between the state government and FAAN, the Managing Director of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Oluwaseun Kuku, commended the state government for its foresight in partnering with FAAN to provide critical infrastructure for the airport.
She highlighted the potential of airports as engines of economic growth and emphasized that the infrastructural upgrade would catalyze the business potential of the South East region, reduce poverty, and enhance the GDP of the states within the geopolitical zone.
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State reiterated his administration’s commitment to making the state a preferred destination for investment, business, tourism, and living.
The governor outlined plans to grow the state’s economy from its current $4.4 billion GDP to $30 billion GDP in the next four to eight years.
To achieve this ambitious goal, the state government recognizes the importance of providing a world-class airport, aviation, and logistics services to attract private investors.
In preparation for the anticipated growth in tourism and flights, the state government is working with FAAN to operationalize the international wing of the airport, construct a cargo terminal, and build warehouses.
The initial issues with the Nigerian Airforce regarding the proposed site for the cargo terminal have been resolved, paving the way for the project to commence.
A committee, chaired by the Commissioner for Transportation in Enugu State, Dr. Obi Ozor, and co-chaired by Mr. Hycienth Ngwu, Head of Business Development, FAAN, has been set up to fine-tune the terms of cooperation between the state government and FAAN and work out other modalities towards the actualization of the long-awaited infrastructural upgrade.
The collaboration between the Enugu State Government and FAAN marks a significant step towards enhancing the state’s economic development and positioning it as a leading destination for investment, business, and tourism in Nigeria.
