Ekondo Microfinance Bank Denies Insensitivity, Accuses Church of Misinformation in Mast Collapse Incident

The Managing Director (MD) of Ekondo Microfinance Bank, Mr. Austin Agbesoyin, has addressed the allegations of insensitivity towards the Methodist Church Nigeria, after a telecommunication mast owned by the bank collapsed and damaged the manse of its minister-in-charge in Cross River State.
In a recent interview with LEADERSHIP, the bank’s MD refuted claims that the bank had been insensitive to the plight of the church, stating that the bank has never and will not abdicate its responsibility in such cases.
The bank had been accused of being indifferent to the church’s demands for N35m compensation for the damaged manse.
Agbesoyin emphasized that the bank is mindful of its corporate social responsibility and is committed to fixing the damaged property of the church.
He explained that the bank’s intention was to restore the damage within 24 hours, but it was hindered by the church, which refused to let the bank proceed with its plans.
The bank’s insurance company was also denied access to assess the extent of the damage, as the church insisted on conducting its own assessment.
The bank has reportedly lost about N200m due to the closure of its branch in the area.
Agbesoyin expressed his disappointment at the church’s actions, stating that the bank had been unfairly blamed for the incident.
He claimed that the bank was not allowed to leave the collapsed mast at the site, despite the bank’s efforts to reach out to community youths.
The MD concluded by expressing his confusion over the church’s approach, stating that the church’s actions were not in line with Christian values.
He emphasized that the bank is committed to resolving the situation and hopes for a fair resolution to the issue.
