Eight Suspended Zamfara Lawmakers Sue Speaker, Attorney-General for Rights Violation

Eight suspended members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly have taken legal action against the Speaker, Bilyaminu Moriki, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Abdulaziz Sani, and several other parties over alleged breaches of their constitutional rights.

The lawmakers are accusing the Speaker, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Service, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, of attempting to arrest and prosecute them for allegedly sitting for a plenary session on February 22, 2024, and for allegedly breaking into the Zamfara State House of Assembly.

Their counsel, Ibrahim Alli, filed a suit at the Federal High Court, citing violations of their rights to liberty, dignity of human person, and fair hearing.

The case was initially scheduled for hearing on Monday, but due to the non-service of some respondents, the presiding judge, Justice Aminu Bappa, granted a motion for adjournment and rescheduled the case to April 29, 2024.

The lawsuit aims to address the alleged injustices experienced by the suspended lawmakers and seeks to ensure that their constitutional rights are upheld and protected.
