EFCC Criticized for Selective Justice as Bobrisky Faces Jail, Real Economic Crimes Unaddressed

Activist and online newspaper publisher, Omoyele Sowore, has voiced his opposition to the recent six-month jail sentence of controversial transgender, Idris Okuneye, a.k.a Bobrisky, for the mutilation of the Naira currency by a Federal High Court in Lagos.

Sowore argued that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is focusing on the wrong targets while real economic criminals remain unprosecuted for their significant damage to the Nigerian economy.

Sowore, a presidential candidate for the African Action Congress (AAC) in both the 2019 and 2023 general elections, criticized the energy put into prosecuting and jailing Bobrisky, suggesting that the real offense was not merely spraying Naira at a party.

He pointed out the lack of action against more significant economic offenders, such as former President Muhammadu Buhari, his former Attorney General Abubakar Malami, SAN, his former personal secretary Tunde Sabiu, and former Central Bank of Nigeria governor Godwin Emefiele, who have yet to face consequences for their actions that have significantly harmed the nation’s economy.

Having recently returned to the United States to reunite with his family after being detained in Nigeria on alleged terrorism charges, Sowore took to Facebook to express his views on the matter.

He questioned the EFCC’s priorities and their handling of cases involving real financial criminals that have been ongoing since 2007.

Sowore wrote: “The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is gleefully announcing that Bobrisky has been jailed for six months without an option of a fine for ‘mutilating’ the Nigerian currency, the Naira.

The real people destroying the economy, like former President Muhammadu Buhari, his former Attorney General Abubakar Malami, SAN, his former personal secretary Tunde Sabiu, and even the former Central Bank of Nigeria governor, @Godwin Emefiele (who was just now granted an N50M bail in Lagos for an offence involving N50billion), are yet to be jailed for the massive economic damage they did to ruin Nigeria.

The energy put into prosecuting and jailing a crossdresser, Bobrisky, shows his real offence could not have been spraying Naira at a party.

Let’s see how the EFCC handles cases involving real financial criminals, a long list being prosecuted since 2007-who destroyed the naira in the near future. #RevolutionNow.”

Sowore’s statement highlights the ongoing debate surrounding the selective application of justice and the need for the EFCC to focus on prosecuting those responsible for the significant economic crimes that have impacted Nigeria’s financial stability.
