Nigeria's Transmission Company has switched on new high-voltage power lines in Edo State. The dual 330kV routes connect Ihovbor to both Benin and Ajaokuta transmission hubs.
Officials commissioned the infrastructure at a ceremony in Benin on Thursday. The network will pump an extra 600 megawatts into the national grid system.
Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, TCN's Managing Director, led the event.
He explained the project strengthens how power moves across Nigeria's transmission backbone.
"Before now, we generated power but couldn't move it out efficiently," Abdulaziz said. "This project lets us evacuate far more electricity to where Nigerians need it."
Two new transmission routes span 14 kilometres total distance. They link the existing Benin-Ajaokuta line directly into Ihovbor Substation.
According to him, the setup improves flexibility within Nigeria's power network. It also strengthens supply specifically across the Benin corridor and surrounding regions.
Industries and households nationwide stand to benefit from increased power access. Distribution companies now have better connection to generation plants in the area.
Transmission bottlenecks should ease considerably with the new lines operational. System reliability will improve, officials confirmed at Thursday's event.
Customers across Nigeria should see steadier electricity supplies going forward. The project marks a significant step in closing the nation's power evacuation gap.
