Edo Deputy Governor Shaibu Takes Legal Action to Stop Impeachment

Edo Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, has taken legal action to stop the impeachment proceedings initiated by the Edo State House of Assembly.

Shaibu, who is currently embroiled in a political battle with Governor Godwin Obaseki, approached a court in Abuja to obtain a restraining order against the impeachment.

The impeachment notice was announced by the House’s majority leader, Charity Aiguobarueghian, during a plenary session on Wednesday.

The petition, signed by 21 out of the 24 members of the House, cited grounds of perjury and revealing government secrets as reasons for the impeachment.

In response, the Edo State House of Assembly’s speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, directed the clerk to serve the impeachment notice to the deputy governor and gave him seven days to respond.

The political tension between the Governor and his deputy is believed to stem from their differences over the Edo 2024 governorship ticket.

Asue Ighodalo, a business ally and political son of Obaseki, recently emerged as the PDP governorship candidate at the party primaries in Benin.

While the outcome of the legal proceedings remains uncertain, it is clear that the political landscape in Edo State is becoming increasingly strained.

As the situation unfolds, the focus will be on whether the court grants the restraining order and how the political turmoil impacts the future of the state’s governance.
