The Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, has been impeached by the Edo State House of Assembly.
This decision comes after the adoption of the report by the seven-man investigative panel appointed to probe allegations of misconduct against Shaibu.
The impeachment proceedings, which began earlier in the week, reached their climax with a vote that led to Shaibu’s ouster from his position.
The panel, headed by Justice Stephen A. Omonuwa (Rtd), had earlier concluded its investigation without Shaibu or his counsel appearing before it.
The panel’s report was subsequently forwarded to the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa.
It is important to note that Shaibu had previously challenged the panel’s proceedings, citing an Abuja High Court order that called for all parties in a case of enforcement of fundamental human rights to appear on April 8, 2024.
Despite this, the panel proceeded with its investigation, eventually leading to the impeachment of the Deputy Governor.
The impeachment of Shaibu marks a significant moment in the political landscape of Edo State, with potential implications for the state’s governance and future political dynamics.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the state government will respond to the impeachment and the legal challenges that may arise from it.
