Edo Assembly Initiates Impeachment Process Against Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu

The Edo State House of Assembly has initiated the process of impeaching Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu.

The news broke on March 6, 2024, when the petition for the impeachment was read during a plenary session of the house.

According to reports, the petition was signed by 21 out of 24 members of the assembly, surpassing the two-thirds requirement stipulated in Section 188 (2a) of the Nigerian constitution.

The petition, dated March 5, 2024, was addressed to the Speaker of the House, Blessing Agbebaku.

The grounds for the impeachment were not publicly disclosed, but the move is speculated to be related to the ongoing face-off between Deputy Governor Shaibu and Governor Godwin Obaseki.

This political rift has been in the spotlight since the recent gubernatorial election primaries, where Shaibu lost out to his rival, Asue Ighodalo.

In response to the petition, the Speaker of the House, Blessing Agbebaku, has given the deputy governor seven days to respond to the allegations against him.

The Speaker has also directed the clerk of the house, Yahaya Omogbai, to serve the impeachment notice to Shaibu.

The political turmoil in Edo State has captured the attention of the entire nation, as the outcome of this impeachment process could have significant implications for the future of the state’s governance.

As the situation unfolds, the public eagerly awaits further updates and developments on this high-profile political drama.
