Edo Assembly Faces Criticism for Rejecting Court Summon on Shaibu’s Impeachment

The Coalition of Registered Political Parties (CRPP) in Edo State has recently condemned the Edo State House of Assembly and Governor Godwin Obaseki for refusing to receive a Federal High Court summon regarding the impeachment of Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu.

The CRPP criticized the assembly’s desperation to impeach the deputy governor despite pleas from various groups and individuals.

The CRPP reaffirmed its position that the deputy governor is innocent of the allegations, stating that the assembly should have presented their accusations in an open court instead of displaying what they described as “rascality.”

They emphasized that a clean mind should not fear any accusation, and everyone has a right to participate in elections.

The group was particularly disturbed by the assembly’s rejection of the Federal High Court summons delivered by a court bailiff.

The bailiff was reportedly harassed and chased out by the assembly’s security men, which the CRPP considered an appalling act.

They argued that the assembly should have respected the summons as it came from one of the three arms of government recognized by the Nigerian constitution.

While the CRPP has made its stance clear, a member of the Labour Party (LP) in Edo State, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the party considers the impeachment saga an internal affair of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

As a member of the CRPP, the LP was aware of the statement issued by the coalition’s chairman, Dr. Samson Isibor, but chose not to get involved in the matter.

The Edo State House of Assembly and Governor Obaseki have yet to respond to the CRPP’s criticism.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the impeachment proceedings against Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu will progress and whether the assembly will face further consequences for their actions.
