DJ Spinall Makes History as First Afrobeats DJ at Coachella

The prestigious Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has unveiled Nigerian DJ Oluseye Desmond Sodamola, known professionally as DJ Spinall, as the first Afrobeats DJ to grace its stage.

This monumental achievement marks a significant milestone for DJs, producers, and artists hailing from Nigeria and showcases the growing influence of Afrobeats on the global music scene.

As the first Nigerian and Afrobeats DJ featured in Mixmag’s prestigious list of the top 25 DJs who defined the year 2023, Spinall is no stranger to breaking barriers.

He has already etched his name in history as the first Nigerian and Afrobeats DJ to perform at the renowned Glastonbury Festival in the UK, following in the footsteps of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and paving the way for other Nigerian artists like Wizkid and Burna Boy.

With his electrifying performances scheduled for two consecutive weekends on April 13 and 20, Spinall is set to command the Sahara Tent, a stage known for its high-energy music and innovative exploration of the intersection of technology and art.

This unique platform will undoubtedly provide an unparalleled experience for fans of Afrobeats and showcase the genre’s rich diversity and global appeal.

Spinall’s excitement for this monumental moment is palpable, as he acknowledges the significance of Afrobeats taking center stage at Coachella.

The festival will not only celebrate the genre’s growth and achievements but also inspire artists to continue pushing the boundaries and sharing their art and culture with the world.

The journey to this historic moment has been a remarkable one for the Lagos-born DJ, who first gained prominence in 2004 as a radio DJ at Raypower 100.5 FM.

After studying Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Olabisi Onabanjo University, he honed his skills at Tenstrings Music Institute and later joined Industry Nite, promoting underground talents at the weekly platform.

In 2014, Spinall launched TheCAPMusic, a record label/management company, and released his first hit single “GbaGbe E” featuring Burna Boy.

Since then, he has collaborated with a multitude of prominent artists, including 2Baba, Wizkid, Wande Coal, Davido, Mr Eazi, Tiwa Savage, Kizz Daniel, and many more.

Throughout his career, Spinall has performed at numerous prestigious events and shows, such as the BET Awards 2017, Mixmag New York Gig, One Africa Music Fest, and Bruno Mars Live and Exclusive, among others.

As he prepares to make history at Coachella, fans eagerly await the opportunity to share their favorite Afrobeats songs for him to perform on the grand stage.

With DJ Spinall’s groundbreaking performance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, the world will witness the power and influence of Afrobeats as it continues to captivate global audiences and inspire a new generation of artists.
