The Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) has reinforced its commitment to inclusive development by providing mobility aids and assistive devices to physically challenged persons across its mandate areas, in a move aimed at improving their quality of life and social participation.
The Commission’s Executive Director, Finance and Administration, Chief Oghenekome Reginald Okpobor, reaffirmed this commitment on April 1, 2026, while receiving a delegation of physically challenged persons at the Commission’s headquarters. Speaking on behalf of the Board, Okpobor expressed appreciation for their engagement and assured them of DESOPADEC’s continued responsiveness to their needs.
“We appreciate you for coming and sharing your concerns with us. Our doors remain open at DESOPADEC. Under the leadership of His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, we are committed to serving the people diligently,” he said. He added that the Commission draws inspiration from the Governor’s performance, pledging that all commitments made to the group would be honoured.
Earlier, the Chairman of the delegation commended Chief Festus Ochonogor for his inclusive approach and responsiveness, noting that physically challenged persons make up a significant voting bloc in the state. He assured the Commission of their support ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial elections.
Also speaking, Comrade Obruche lauded the Board’s friendly disposition toward persons with disabilities, pointing out that the absence of protests from the group reflects growing confidence in the Commission. He, however, called for stricter implementation of the Disability Act, particularly in ensuring accessibility in public infrastructure.
Highlight of the engagement was the distribution of assistive devices, including six artificial limbs, 25 wheelchairs, 35 armpit crutches, 35 elbow crutches, 10 hearing aids, and 32 guide canes for the visually impaired—bringing renewed hope and relief to beneficiaries across the oil-producing communities.
