Desmond Elliot has stepped back from the APC primary race in Surulere Constituency I. The three-term lawmaker made the announcement via video on Wednesday.
Elliot accused rivals of intimidation and political harassment targeting his supporters. He alleged that security details were pulled from him without explanation.
According to the lawmaker, local government staff seen as loyal to his camp faced removal from their posts. "What exists today in Surulere is coercion and forced allegiance," he said in the video.
His withdrawal comes as Barakat Odunuga-Bakare, who enjoys backing from Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, pulls ahead in the ongoing contest. The primary election itself took place amid significant tension within the constituency.
Elliot noted that mounting pressure and doubts about the election's fairness pushed him to exit the race. He did not contest the outcome but cited credibility concerns as his reason.
His decision to withdraw now clears the field for other aspirants still competing for the seat. Elliot represented Surulere Constituency I for three consecutive terms before this development.
Political observers say the withdrawal signals deep divisions within the APC's Lagos chapter ahead of general elections. Sources within the party remained unavailable for immediate comment on the allegations.
