Delta State Assembly Passes Bill to Recognize Exceptional Achievements of Indigenes

The Delta State House of Assembly has recently passed the State Merit Award Bill, aimed at recognizing the exceptional achievements of the state’s indigenes, whether dead or alive.

The bill was passed on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, following the adoption of the report of the House Joint Committee on Information and Special Committee at the plenary in Asaba.

The House Leader and Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Emeka Nwaobi (Aniocha North-PDP), explained that the bill sought to give recognition to individuals who had excelled in their chosen careers and contributed to the development of the state.

He emphasized that such recognition would not only boost the morale of the recipients but also challenge others to perform exceptionally in their respective fields.

However, Nwaobi clarified that individuals who were still in service might not be eligible for such recognition, as they would have to wait for five years after leaving office before being considered.

This condition also applies to individuals in the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary.

The Speaker of the House praised the lawmakers for their swift passage of the bill, stating that it was a great achievement and victory for democracy in the state.

By acknowledging the contributions of exceptional individuals, the Delta State Assembly aims to foster a culture of excellence and inspire its citizens to strive for greatness.
