...Delta signs MoU for vehicle conversion Center
The Delta State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NIPCO Gas Limited to establish a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicle conversion centre in Asaba.
The signing ceremony, held on Thursday, was attended by Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu, Commissioner for Transport, Mr Onoriode Agofure, and Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Ekemejero Ohwovoriole, SAN, who represented the state government. Mr. Sanjay Tarat signed on behalf of NIPCO Gas Limited.
Speaking after the signing, Dr Emu emphasized that the initiative aligns with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s commitment to sustainable and cost-effective transportation. He urged NIPCO Gas to adhere to high-quality standards and ensure the timely execution of the project.
"We have demonstrated our commitment by providing a 3,000-square-meter facility in Asaba. The transition to CNG is the future, and this agreement ensures we lay the right foundation before introducing more CNG-powered vehicles," Emu stated.
He further stressed that the state government expects strict adherence to deadlines and quality, warning that the MoU could be revoked if the company fails to meet expectations.
Following the ceremony, officials visited the designated project site on Summit Road, Asaba. Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Agofure, highlighted the economic benefits of CNG, urging residents to embrace the shift from petrol.
Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, explained that a detailed feasibility study preceded the project launch. He assured that once the Asaba facility is operational, similar centres would be established in Warri and other major cities, ultimately driving down transportation costs.
NIPCO Gas Limited’s Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Sanjay Tarat, expressed appreciation to Governor Oborevwori and state officials, affirming the company’s commitment to completing the project ahead of schedule.
"Delta State is the first in Nigeria to provide this kind of support for CNG infrastructure. While we initially projected six months for completion, we aim to deliver even sooner," Tarat said.
The project marks a significant step in Delta State’s transition towards cleaner energy and more affordable transportation solutions.
