Delta Assembly Urges Governor Oborevwori to Investigate Okuama Crisis

The Delta State House of Assembly has called upon Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to establish a commission of inquiry to investigate the ongoing crisis between Okuama in Ughelli South and Okoloba in Bomadi Local Government Area.

The motion was raised by the member representing Ughelli South State Constituency, Festus Utuama, during a plenary session on Tuesday.

The Assembly condemned the unprovoked killing of 16 Nigerian Army officers and one civilian, who were on a peace mission in the community.

They urged Governor Oborevwori to direct relevant security agencies to investigate the incident, arrest the perpetrators, and ensure they are prosecuted.

In the wake of this tragic event, the lawmakers appealed to the military to exercise restraint and temper justice with mercy.

They also requested that Governor Oborevwori take immediate measures to protect the elderly, women, children, and vulnerable individuals in the affected communities, who have faced severe hardships and loss of property since the crisis began.

During the session, a minute of silence was observed in honor of the slain soldiers. The motion was unanimously adopted by the House, and a copy was forwarded to Governor Oborevwori for prompt action.

The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, instructed the Assembly’s Committee on Legislative Compliance to ensure the resolution is fully implemented.

The Okuama crisis has garnered significant attention from the state’s legislative body, with the Delta Assembly taking a strong stance against the violence and urging the governor to intervene.

The establishment of a commission of inquiry would help to uncover the root causes of the conflict and pave the way for lasting peace in the region.

As the situation in Okuama and Okoloba remains tense, the Delta State House of Assembly’s call for action underscores the importance of addressing the underlying issues and ensuring the safety and well-being of the affected communities.
