The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State has officially declared Governor Sheriff Oborevwori as the new leader of the party in the state, following his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC on Monday, April 28, 2025.

In a statement issued on April 30 by the State Publicity Secretary, Valentine Onojeghuo, the party emphasized that Governor Oborevwori's assumption of leadership is in line with the APC’s established tradition, where a sitting governor automatically becomes the party leader in the state.

"We wish to categorically state that with his entry into the APC, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori assumes the position of the leader of the Party in Delta State. This position is not subject to debate or contention," the statement read.

The APC referenced the Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima’s remarks at the defection ceremony, noting that the national leadership's stance was clearly affirmed during the event. The party described this as "authoritative, binding and final."

The statement further cautioned against any internal opposition, warning that the party will not condone actions aimed at undermining the governor’s position.

"Delta APC finds it strange, arrogant and reprehensible for any individual to continue to arrogate or to parade himself as the leader of the Party in Delta State in clear opposition to the present reality," the statement continued. "Anyone who seeks to undermine this position... will face severe sanctions from the Party."

The APC called on all members and stakeholders to support Governor Oborevwori and unite under his leadership, reiterating commitment to the delivery of democratic dividends under his M.O.R.E. agenda.

"Delta APC is solidly behind His Excellency as our leader, and we recognize no other individual in that role," the party concluded.

The development marks a significant shift in Delta State’s political alignment, as the APC prepares to consolidate its structure under new leadership.
