Civil Society Launches Campaign to Strengthen Electoral Reforms in Nigeria Ahead of 2027 Elections

In a bid to restore public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral system and address the challenges witnessed during the 2023 polls, the Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre (PAACA) has inaugurated a project called #ChangeOurElections.

This initiative is aimed at promoting transparency, accountability, and citizen participation in the electoral process as the country prepares for the 2027 election cycle.

Ezenwa Nwagwu, Executive Director of PAACA, emphasized the importance of the project in ensuring credible and transparent elections in Nigeria.

Despite the innovations introduced with the Electoral Act 2022, citizens still express dissatisfaction with the management of the electoral process.

The #ChangeOurElections project will be implemented across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to engage citizens and stakeholders in demanding electoral reforms that guarantee free, fair, and credible elections.

“Through Citizen’s town hall meetings across the 36 states and the FCT, PAACA, in collaboration with other organisations, seeks to empower citizens and stakeholders to demand electoral reforms that will ensure free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria,” Nwagwu said.

The town hall meetings will bring together citizens from various backgrounds to discuss critical issues related to electoral reform and constitutional amendment.

These discussions are expected to generate public interest and build momentum for electoral reform.

Resolutions from the town hall meetings will be submitted to the National Assembly, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and other relevant stakeholders.

This collaborative effort aims to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral process and ensure that future elections are conducted with integrity and transparency.

The #ChangeOurElections campaign is a significant step towards addressing the concerns of the Nigerian public and promoting a more robust and inclusive electoral system.

As the country moves closer to the 2027 elections, initiatives like this will play a crucial role in shaping the future of Nigeria’s democracy.
