Blackout in Nigeria: CERON Urges President Tinubu to Reverse Power Sector Privatization

The Campaign for Equal Rights and Opportunities for all Nigerians (CERON) has called on the President Bola Tinubu-led administration to revisit the privatization of the power sector with the aim of reversing the policy.

The appeal comes in response to the recent blackouts and the crippling of small and medium scale businesses due to the privatization of the power sector.

According to the Secretary of CERON, Mr. Francis Odiir, the privatization of the power sector has left the sector worse off and contributed to the decline of small and medium scale businesses in the country.

He argues that the development in the sector in recent times is a clear indication that the privatization of the sector was a mistake.

Odiir insists that Nigerians enjoyed better power supply under the defunct National Electric Power Authority (NEPA) and later Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).

He claims that most Nigerians prefer a reversal to the NEPA days.

The appeal for the reversal of the privatization policy is not only supported by CERON but also by workers in the sector, who have not seen any tangible improvements since the sector went into private hands.

The recent blackouts and the worsening of the economic situation in Nigeria have only served to highlight the need for a change in the power sector.

The privatization of the power sector was intended to improve the efficiency and reliability of electricity supply in the country.

However, the current situation suggests that the privatization has not achieved its objectives.

The lack of power has led to the closure of small and medium scale businesses, and even big businesses are now relying on diesel-powered generators to stay afloat.

CERON urges President Tinubu to consider reversing the privatization of the power sector in Nigeria.

The current situation is unsustainable, and a return to the NEPA days could provide a more stable and reliable power supply for the country.
