Benue Attorney General Defends Governor Alia’s Car Gift to Judiciary

The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and Public Order of Benue State, Hon. Barr. Fidelis Mnyim, has defended Governor Hyacinth Alia’s recent car gift to the judiciary, emphasizing that it is a symbol of support and commitment as promised when he assumed office.
This statement comes in response to a query posed by Prof. Ernest Ojukwu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, who questioned the viability of the autonomy granted to Benue State Judiciary if the State governor was still buying cars for them.
Governor Alia recently donated six (SUV) vehicles to the judiciary, a move that was seen by some as undermining the financial autonomy granted to the judiciary in February 2024.
This autonomy included both recurrent and capital expenditures, with the judiciary receiving their complete share of funds from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) and Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).
Barr. Mnyim clarified that the procurement of vehicles for the judiciary was an additional gesture by the Governor, demonstrating his commitment to justice and the law, rather than undermining the judiciary’s financial autonomy.
He emphasized that the judiciary has the financial capacity to purchase vehicles of their choice, as the allocated funds are released to them at the end of each month.
The Attorney General stressed that Governor Alia’s gesture was intended to inspire the judiciary to strive for excellence in their service delivery.
He further highlighted that the Governor’s commitment to the welfare of the judiciary and the entire citizenry of Benue State is evident in his unwavering dedication to fostering an environment conducive to justice, equity, and progress.
The Attorney General’s defense of Governor Alia’s car gift to the judiciary underscores the importance of both financial autonomy and symbolic gestures in fostering a strong and independent judiciary.
It also highlights the multifaceted approach to governance adopted by the Benue State government, focusing not only on financial independence but also on the welfare and morale of the judiciary and other sectors in the state.
