Bayelsa Governor Diri Lauds Peaceful Conduct of Local Government Election

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has expressed satisfaction with the peaceful and successful conduct of the local government election that took place in the state on April 6, 2024.

Governor Diri, who voted alongside his wife, Dr Gloria, at Kalamaowei wari unit 4 ward 6 in Sampou community, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, commended the state independent electoral commission for the organization of the poll.

The Governor was optimistic that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which he believes enjoys the support of the people and had vigorously campaigned across the state, will emerge victorious in the 105 wards of the eight Local Government Areas.

He pointed to the outcome of the November 11, 2023 governorship election as evidence of the PDP’s strong support in the state.

Governor Diri praised the security agencies for their role in ensuring a peaceful and successful election, noting that there were no reports of security breaches across the state.

He also mentioned that only the faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) led by Dennis Otiotio under the control of Chief Timipre Sylva boycotted the poll, and that the party had more than one faction.

The successful conduct of the local government election in Bayelsa State reflects the commitment of the government and the electoral commission to ensuring a peaceful and transparent democratic process at the third tier of government.

As the results of the election are awaited, the state looks forward to a new leadership at the local government level.
