Bandits have killed three Federal Road Safety Commission officers in Kebbi State. The attack happened over the weekend on the Tsamiya–Illo road in Bagudo.
Those killed were DCRMA Umar Aliyu, SRMA Ezra Manu Gona, and RMA I Mansur Ibrahim Nasir. All three were carrying out routine duties when ambushed.
Residents in the area told our correspondent what happened that day. "The officers tried running from the bandits on motorcycles," one local recalled.
"But the attackers chased them down and gunned them before they could reach safety."
Over 20 armed bandits carried out the assault. After killing the FRSC personnel, they retreated into the forest on their bikes.
This marks another deadly incident in an increasingly volatile zone. "It's the fifth time they've attacked security officers at checkpoints here," the local said.
Bandits and the Lakurawa terrorist group have been terrorising the Tsamiya corridor for months.
Last year alone, more than 10 customs, immigration, and police officers died in the same Tsamiya/Maje axis. The region has become a hotbed of militant activity.
The state's FRSC command is yet to issue any formal statement on the killings. Calls to the agency's public relations officer went unanswered as of press time.
Governor Nasir Idris convened an emergency security meeting at the weekend in response. He met with officials at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi to review security operations.
The governor expressed alarm at the frequency of these attacks across the state. He vowed his administration would take decisive action against the violence.
"We will not tolerate informants helping these criminals," Idris declared. According to him, anyone found collaborating with bandits will face prosecution.
"Justice will be served to the full extent," he promised.
Security analysts warn that the Bagudo area requires immediate military intervention. Without reinforced patrols, more lives could be lost in coming weeks.
Families of the slain officers have begun receiving condolences from community members. Their bodies have been recovered and prepared for burial rites.
