Gunmen killed two farmers and 21 cattle in Plateau State on Sunday. The attacks happened in two separate locations within hours of each other.
Around 1 p.m., armed men targeted herders grazing cattle near Gero in Jos South local government area. One person was injured in the shooting, and 21 animals were killed.
Hours later, at approximately 7:20 p.m., another group of gunmen struck Kyeng village in Bachi District, Riyom LGA. Two young men died in that assault.
The victims were identified as Peter Dung, 22, and Amos Bele Danbwarang, 19. They were shot dead as they were ambushed, and the attackers escaped into surrounding bushland.
Rwang Tengwong, National Publicity Secretary of Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), issued a statement Monday condemning the killings. He described the attacks as "barbaric and inhuman."
According to Tengwong, the violence represents continued assaults on innocent communities across Plateau State. BYM is demanding immediate action from security forces.
"Security agencies must go after the perpetrators," Tengwong said. He also called on government officials at all levels to take decisive action.
Ibrahim Yusuf Babayo, state chairman of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), confirmed the herders' attack. He said the incident occurred as cattle were being grazed peacefully.
In his words: "Gunmen opened fire around 1 p.m. while herders were grazing." One herder was wounded, and 21 cattle perished in the volley of shots.
Babayo noted the cattle were worth millions of naira. MACBAN has called on security forces to prevent future incidents.
Troops from Sector 3 were deployed to support personnel already operating in the Gero area. Sector 6 of Operation Enduring Peace was already present during the attack.
These incidents reflect wider security challenges plaguing Plateau communities. Armed clashes between herders and farmers have become increasingly common across the state.
No official statement from security agencies had been released by press time on Monday. Investigations into both attacks are reportedly underway.
