Aree of Iree Chieftaincy: Adeleke Postpones Staff of Office Presentation Following Court Order

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has postponed the ceremonial presentation of staff of office to Oba Muritala Oyelakin, the newly appointed Aree of Iree.
This decision follows a court order issued by Justice Michael Awe of the Osun State High Court, restraining Governor Adeleke from proceeding with the presentation.
The court order was granted after an interlocutory injunction was filed by the deposed monarch, Oba Raphael Ponle, who contested the appointment process of his successor, Oba Oyelakin, and sought to halt the event pending the determination of the substantive suit.
Governor Adeleke’s decision to respect the court order underscores his administration’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and due process in the state.
The controversy surrounding the Aree of Iree chieftaincy stems from the deposition of Oba Ponle by Governor Adeleke in 2022, on the grounds that the appointment of Oba Ponle by his predecessor, Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, did not follow due process.
The situation has led to a division within the town, with both monarchs claiming the throne and their respective supporters divided along loyalty lines.
The case is set to commence its hearing on May 8, with the court set to address the substantive issues raised by Oba Ponle’s suit.
The state government, through the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, emphasized that the postponement is not a reflection on the legitimacy of Oba Oyelakin’s appointment as the Aree of Iree.
The government’s statement reassured the monarch and the people of Iree of Governor Adeleke’s commitment to resolving the chieftaincy dispute in accordance with the law.
The ceremonial presentation of staff of office to Oba Oyelakin, initially scheduled for May 4, 2024, is now on hold until further notice.
This development follows the earlier approval granted to Oba Oyelakin by Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration, which recognized him as the substantive Aree of Iree.
The state government has urged all parties involved to remain calm and law-abiding as the legal proceedings unfold.
