The ongoing council election in Taraba State has been met with strong opposition from the All Progressives Congress (APC, stakeholders who are demanding its cancellation.
A former House of Representatives member for Wukari/Ibi federal constituency, Danjuma Usman Shiddi, who is one of the stakeholders, claimed that the election was marred by widespread irregularities in the state.
The former lawmaker called for the immediate cancellation of the exercise, alleging that no election took place in Wukari council.
The APC member, who lost the election for the Southern Taraba senatorial district in the last general election, accused some government officials in the state of tampering with the council election.
He said that the APC was boycotting the election because the results were already predetermined.
The Taraba State APC chairman, Ibrahim Tuktur El-Sudi, had earlier sounded the alarm over the alleged irregularities in the election.
He described the exercise as a “sham” and called for a referendum that would give the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, the mandate to conduct council elections across the country.
The chairman expressed his displeasure at the conduct of the election, alleging that most of the polling units lacked election result sheets.
