In a major leap toward the creation of Anioma State, 85 senators of the 10th National Assembly have signed in support of the constitutional proposal, signalling growing national momentum ahead of a crucial round of public hearings scheduled for July 4 and 5.
The zonal public hearings, organised by the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, will be held simultaneously in six geopolitical zones: Lagos, Enugu, Ikot Ekpene, Jos, Maiduguri, and Kano. These sessions will gather public input on a range of constitutional reforms, including state creation.
The senators' signatures were secured following a personal appeal by Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North Senatorial District and is the lead voice behind the Anioma State movement. His letter, dated May 27, 2025, urged lawmakers to support Senate Bill 481, which seeks to create Anioma State by carving it out of Delta State.
Describing the bill as a matter of equity, justice, and national balance, Nwoko argued that the South-East remains the only geopolitical zone with five states, while others have six or seven. He maintained that Anioma, with its deep Igbo cultural roots, is a natural fit for the South-East and its creation would correct a historical imbalance.
“This is not just about boundaries; it's about healing a national wound and bringing fairness to Nigeria's state structure,” Nwoko wrote. “Let us be remembered as the Senate that brought balance and justice.”
In a strong show of grassroots backing, the Ndigbo Progressive Traditional Rulers Forum also formally endorsed the proposal. In a letter dated May 15, 2025, signed by HRM Eze Nnamdi Ofoegbu and HRM Igwe Sunny Orah, the forum praised Nwoko’s leadership and pledged to mobilise traditional support for the initiative.
“We are proud to identify with you in this historic endeavour,” the monarchs wrote. “Your passion for unity and justice aligns with our mission as royal fathers.”
With more senators expected to sign on, the push for Anioma State has gained serious traction—shaping up to be one of the most high-profile proposals in the ongoing constitutional amendment process.
