The campaign for creating Anioma State received a significant boost on Friday, as the Ugo Anioma Movement officially launched its operations in Asaba, Delta State, with a strong endorsement of Senator Ned Munir Nwoko.
Held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre, the inauguration attracted traditional rulers, political leaders, and grassroots supporters from across Delta North. The event underscored a unified stance: Senator Nwoko is seen as the key figure capable of turning the longstanding dream of Anioma State into reality.
The movement unanimously passed a vote of confidence in Senator Nwoko’s leadership. Comrade Victor Sorokwu, president of the Ugo Anioma Movement, moved the motion, pledging full support for the Senator’s efforts and vowing to mobilise grassroots backing across Anioma communities—especially ahead of the constitutional dialogue set for July 4–5 in Uyo.
In his remarks, Senator Nwoko expressed gratitude for the endorsement and reaffirmed his dedication to the Anioma State cause. He announced the inauguration of a high-level Technical Committee to take place on Sunday, June 15, at the Ogwa of the Asagba of Asaba, HRM Prof. Epiphany Azinge. The committee will comprise technocrats, civil society leaders, and political stakeholders selected on merit and commitment.
“This is not the time to play politics,” Nwoko stated. “It’s a long walk to freedom—but we are almost there. The Anioma struggle predates me, and I have pursued it with purpose. This is more than politics—it’s about identity and justice.”
The Senator highlighted key upcoming milestones, including a public hearing in Uyo, the Senate’s third reading of the bill, and a constitutional referendum to be organised by INEC. “INEC will grant a four-week campaign window. I believe 99 percent of morally upright Anioma people will vote yes,” he added.
Nwoko also disclosed that President Bola Tinubu has expressed support and is willing to help secure the necessary two-thirds approval from 24 state Houses of Assembly.
Several dignitaries at the event echoed the movement’s endorsement. Rt. Hon. Ossai Nicholas Ossai, former House of Representatives member, hailed Nwoko as “the currency of the Anioma nation,” applauding his bipartisan and inclusive approach.
His Royal Majesty Henry Kikachukwu, the Obi of Ubulu-Unor, called on Anioma people to rally behind Nwoko, warning that missing this opportunity could delay the dream for another generation.
“The Anioma agitation began 74 years ago with Chief Dennis Osadebay,” he said. “Senator Nwoko represents unity, leadership, and a real chance to deliver this long-awaited dream.”
As the constitutional process advances, the Ugo Anioma Movement is positioning Senator Ned Nwoko as the symbol and strategist behind Anioma’s historic quest. With rising legislative traction, presidential goodwill, and growing grassroots support, the realisation of Anioma State is now closer than ever.
