Akwa Ibom Assembly Urges Stiffer Penalties for Vandals and Scavengers

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has recently voiced its concern over the growing menace of vandals and scavengers, who are actively engaged in the destruction and theft of public infrastructure and government assets.

In a bid to address this issue, the House has called upon the state government to implement tougher measures to curb these activities and protect the public infrastructure.

During a plenary session, a motion was put forward by the House leader, Hon. Sunday Johnny, seeking a ban on scavenging in the state.

The motion highlighted the significant setbacks that the state has faced due to the activities of these “criminal elements,” who have been targeting critical investments and public assets, including school property.

Johnny emphasized that the vandalism of school infrastructure has directly impacted the education of children, as they are left unprotected and exposed without proper roofs.

He pointed out that these activities are not only carried out by the vandals but are also encouraged by those who purchase the stolen items, further exacerbating the issue.

The House has urged the state government to pay special attention to the security and protection of public infrastructure and assets, noting that the inability of security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators has led to a significant increase in these activities.

In support of the motion, several lawmakers, including Hon. Moses Essien (Ibiono Ibom), Hon. Jerry Otu (Ikot Ekpene/Obot Akara), and the deputy house leader, Hon. Otobong Bob (Nsit Ubuim), among others, have emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle the issue.

They have called for the deployment of various security agencies to address the issue at its root by tackling the buyers of stolen goods and discouraging the destruction of public amenities.

As a result of the discussions, the House has resolved to urge the state government to engage the services of the Ibom Community Watch (ICW) in all polling units across the state to monitor the activities of scavengers closely.

The resolution has been directed to be communicated to Governor Umo Eno for implementation in the interest of the government and its people.

The call for action by the Akwa Ibom Assembly highlights the urgent need to address the issue of vandalism and scavenging in the state, with the ultimate goal of protecting public infrastructure and ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens.
