Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Senator Ede Dafinone, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic accident involving the Ujevwu–Itakpe Train Service near Agbor, Delta State, which claimed three lives, and called for an immediate investigation as well as stronger safety measures across Nigeria's railway network.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the senator described the incident as a heartbreaking tragedy and extended his condolences to the families of the victims while praying for the speedy recovery of those injured in the crash.
"I received with deep sorrow the news of the tragic accident involving the Warri–Itakpe Train Service near Agbor, Delta State, on Monday, June 8, 2026," Dafinone said. "My heartfelt condolences go to the families of those who lost their lives in this devastating incident. I also sympathise with the injured and pray for their speedy recovery."
While noting that the Nigerian Railway Corporation had confirmed that three people lost their lives and that all passengers had been accounted for, the lawmaker stressed that every casualty was significant. "Every life lost is one too many, and the pain of the affected families is immeasurable," he stated.
The senator said the tragedy had affected not only the victims' families but also survivors who may continue to grapple with its emotional and psychological consequences. "At this difficult time, our thoughts are with the bereaved families, the injured receiving treatment, and the survivors who may continue to grapple with the emotional impact of the tragedy. As Deltans and Nigerians, we share in their grief and stand with them in solidarity," he added.
Dafinone also commended the swift response mounted by the Delta State Government and other stakeholders following the accident. According to him, the prompt intervention of emergency responders, medical personnel, security agencies, railway officials and volunteers helped save lives and provide critical assistance to affected passengers.

The senator described the accident as a wake-up call for authorities responsible for transportation safety, emphasizing that public confidence in the nation's rail system must be protected. He noted that the Warri–Itakpe rail corridor remains a critical transportation and economic asset connecting several states and serving thousands of passengers.
"This incident is a stark reminder that the safety of Nigerians who rely on public transportation must remain a top priority," Dafinone stated. "The Warri–Itakpe rail corridor is a vital national asset, serving thousands of passengers and supporting economic activities across several states. Its continued success depends on both operational efficiency and public confidence in its safety."
He consequently called for "an immediate, thorough, and transparent investigation" into the circumstances surrounding the accident. According to him, such a probe must establish the facts, identify any operational or technical failures and recommend practical measures to prevent future occurrences.
"The affected families deserve answers, and the public deserves reassurance that every lesson from this tragedy will be acted upon," he said.
Beyond the investigation, Dafinone urged the Federal Ministry of Transportation, the Nigerian Railway Corporation and other relevant safety agencies to conduct a comprehensive review of operational and safety procedures on the Warri–Itakpe corridor and throughout the country's rail network.
"Regular maintenance, strict compliance with safety standards, and robust emergency preparedness measures are essential to safeguarding lives," he stressed.
The lawmaker further appealed for adequate medical attention, counselling services and support for survivors and affected families to help them cope with the aftermath of the incident.
"May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace. May God grant comfort to their families, healing to the injured, and strength to all those affected by this tragedy," Dafinone added.
