The African Democratic Congress believes Nigeria faces collapse if President Bola Tinubu's administration continues its current trajectory. Bolaji Abdullahi, the party's national publicity secretary, made the claim during an appearance on Symfoni TV.
Abdullahi accused the president of failing across all major sectors. He pointed to struggles in the economy, security challenges, and a lack of job opportunities for young Nigerians.
"If Nigeria continues to stand on President Tinubu's failed mandate, this country may just collapse," Abdullahi said. He added that citizens are suffering while the government shows little concern for their plight.
The ADC spokesman reported hearing from business owners whose enterprises have folded. "I've met people who cry and say, 'Look, we did not do anything wrong, but our businesses have collapsed,'" he told the television station.
Abdullahi stressed that Nigeria is witnessing unprecedented hardships. He highlighted not just the rising cost of living but also deepening insecurity across the nation.
He referenced the recent abduction and release of schoolchildren from Oyo State. Governor Seyi Makinde raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding their rescue, suggesting political motivations rather than pure terrorism.
"The governor is calling for external investigators into what happened. We have to take it seriously," Abdullahi noted.
He questioned whether such suspicions from a sitting governor would normally emerge without substance.
The party official challenged supporters of the administration to defend its record. He said he's attempted asking even the government's allies to name a single achievement.
"I've tried to be charitable. I've tried to talk to even some of their ardent supporters to mention one thing that they've done right," he explained.
The only response he gets, he claimed, is that Tinubu showed courage in removing fuel subsidies.
Abdullahi rejected this argument outright. He contended that while the subsidy removal itself wasn't inherently wrong, its consequences have devastated the nation.
"It's not the removal of the subsidy, but the net consequence of the removal of subsidy is what has landed us in this catastrophic situation we found ourselves, because the president took an impulsive decision," the spokesman said. He suggested the move lacked proper planning and consideration for ordinary citizens.
