Abuja Rail Mass Transit Nears Completion: A Major Milestone for Public Transportation in the Capital

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Mr Nyesom Wike, announced that the Abuja Rail Mass Transit (ARMT) project is now 95% complete and will be ready for inauguration in May.

This significant development is part of the government’s efforts to improve public transportation in the federal capital, Abuja.

During a visit from the Belgium Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Daniel Bertrand, on Wednesday, Minister Wike highlighted the progress of the project and the government’s commitment to enhancing the city’s transportation infrastructure.

The ARMT project has been a priority for President Bola Tinubu, who has directed that all possible measures be taken to ensure the completion of the project within his first year in office.

Once operational, the light rail system will provide residents with a convenient and efficient transportation option, reducing the need for private vehicles and easing traffic congestion within the city.

In addition to the ARMT project, the government is also in talks with private investors to further improve public transportation in the FCT.

The minister acknowledged the current public transportation deficit and its impact on security, emphasizing the need for a more organized and regulated system.

To address this issue, the government plans to construct taxi and bus terminals where residents can access registered and identified operators.

Construction of these terminals is set to begin next month, pending approval from the Bureau of Public Procurement.

Furthermore, the government is engaging in discussions with the Inspector General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, and cattle herders to address the issue of open grazing in the city.

The goal is to find alternative solutions for herders and to ensure a safe and secure environment for all residents.

During his visit, Ambassador Bertrand expressed satisfaction with the developments in the FCT and the government’s commitment to improving public transportation.

The Belgian government is open to partnerships in areas of mutual benefit, such as security and agriculture.

Overall, the completion of the Abuja Rail Mass Transit project marks a significant milestone for public transportation in the capital and demonstrates the government’s dedication to enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
