Abia Governor Otti Calls for Thorough Investigation into MOUAU Student Protest

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has called for a thorough investigation into the recent student protest at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU), which led to the closure of the school.

During a meeting with the university’s management, led by Vice Chancellor Professor Maduebibisi Iwe, the Governor emphasized the importance of finding the root cause of the unrest to prevent future incidents.

Otti expressed his concern about the academic distortion caused by the school closure, which he believes is not beneficial for the younger generation.

He offered to collaborate with the university management and other stakeholders to facilitate the resumption of full academic activities.

The Governor advised the investigation panel to be open-minded in their approach and to conduct a comprehensive inquiry to ensure that the real reasons for the protest are uncovered.

He also urged them to avoid prejudging the situation, as it may hinder their ability to find the root cause and address it effectively.

In addition to discussing the student protest, the university’s management informed the Governor about the upcoming establishment of an Agric Business Incubation Centre.

In response, Otti directed the Commissioner for Agriculture, Professor Monica Ironkwe, and the Principal Secretary, Mr Chinenye Mba-Uzoukwu, to engage with the institution and discuss the way forward for this initiative.

Regarding the ongoing court case between the university and the Abia State Internal Revenue Service over unremitted PAYE, Governor Otti assured that the matter would be settled amicably.

The Governor’s call for a thorough investigation into the student protest at MOUAU underscores his commitment to addressing the concerns of the students and ensuring a stable academic environment.
