An environmental mobile court in Umuahia convicted 52 people on Saturday for breaching Abia State's environmental laws. The court discharged nine others after determining they were ill, students preparing for exams, or essential workers.
Magistrate O.C. Ibekwe presided over the case involving 64 offenders arrested that morning across various parts of Umuahia.
Officials had detained the suspects between 7am and 10am for trading and loitering during the state's monthly environmental cleanup drive.
The 52 convicted persons were ordered to pay fines to the state government. Three additional offenders received community service sentences as corrective punishment.
Abia's environment commissioner, Philemon Ogbonna, called on residents to back Governor Alex Otti's environmental initiatives. He spoke to journalists after inspecting markets, drainage systems and waste disposal sites across Umuahia.
Ogbonna, represented by Ikechukwu Oriuwa, the permanent secretary of the environment ministry, announced plans to establish a Neighbourhood Environmental Watch throughout the state. According to him, the scheme would strengthen cleaner environmental practices in communities and tackle indiscriminate waste dumping.
The new watchdog will discourage harmful environmental practices, he said. The initiative reflects the state government's commitment to improving sanitation standards statewide.
