Man Arrested for Allegedly Beating Pregnant Girlfriend in Delta State

A 32-year-old man, Ernest Okemute, has been arrested by the Delta State Police Command for allegedly assaulting his pregnant girlfriend, Precious Ekarume, in the Orokpor community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.

The incident was brought to light by Nigerian activist Kelvin Ejumudo, who shared the details on Facebook.

According to Ejumudo, Okemute beat Ekarume with a belt and stick because she refused to abort their pregnancy.

He also reportedly threatened Ekarume, claiming that nothing would happen to him even if he killed her.

In response to the situation, Ejumudo and community leaders intervened, and the Area Commander of the Ughelli Nigeria Police Force, ACP Ademola Adebayor, promptly dispatched officers to arrest Okemute.

The suspect is currently detained at the Ughelli Area Command police cell and is expected to be charged in court soon.

Ejumudo highlighted the Violence Against Persons Act 2022 in Delta State, emphasizing that no one has the right to inflict violence on another person within the state.

This case serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing and preventing violence against women and the legal measures in place to protect victims.
