2024 Hajj: Pilgrims in Limbo as NAHCON Awaits Funds for Service Providers

In the upcoming 2024 hajj pilgrimage, Nigerian pilgrims find themselves in a state of limbo as the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has yet to secure the necessary funds to pay service providers in Saudi Arabia.

This delay is hindering the early preparation of Nigeria’s contingent for the holy pilgrimage, which is scheduled to begin soon.

Despite the announcement of the hajj fare in February, the fluctuating dollar rate and uncertainty about government subsidy have caused apprehension among prospective pilgrims.

The initial fare of N4.8 million was agreed upon after NAHCON negotiated discounts from service providers, but the rising dollar value has put the commission in a difficult position.

NAHCON is currently awaiting a decision from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on whether to approve a subsidized dollar rate for the pilgrims.

Industry experts hope the government will intervene, but the incommunicado between the presidency and NAHCON has stalled payments to service providers.

The situation has left state pilgrims’ welfare boards in a bind as they continue to receive deposits from intending pilgrims, preventing NAHCON from determining the actual number of Nigerians participating in the 2024 hajj.

Intending pilgrims have expressed concern about the lack of communication from NAHCON and state boards regarding the preparation and potential fare increases.

Many are worried that they may not be able to afford any additional costs, especially with the recent hike in the dollar price.

While President Tinubu has promised to support pilgrims, the specifics of the support have not been mentioned.

Some religious leaders argue that food security should be prioritized over hajj subsidies, given the current state of food scarcity and hardship in Nigeria.

As Ramadan approaches, the uncertainty surrounding the 2024 hajj preparations continues to loom over Nigerian pilgrims.

It remains to be seen whether the government will provide the necessary financial support to ensure a successful pilgrimage for its citizens.
