2024 Budget Scandal: PDP Demands Akpabio’s Resignation Amidst Allegations and Suspension of Senator Ningi

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called for the immediate resignation of Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, over allegations of a staggering N3.7 trillion being discreetly inserted into the 2024 budget for non-existent projects

. The party has also demanded that Akpabio report to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the pending case of alleged looting of N108 billion belonging to the people of Akwa Ibom State under his watch as Governor.

The controversy surrounding the 2024 budget does not end there.

The PDP has condemned the suspension of Senator Abdul Ningi, who was representing Bauchi Central in the Senate, without a detailed inquest into the issue of alleged budget padding which he raised.

The party has expressed its support for Senator Ningi, who they believe has shown courage in seeking probity and accountability in the polity.

The suspension of Senator Ningi appears to be a desperate move to suppress investigation, conceal and sweep the facts under the carpet.

The PDP has also questioned why the APC leadership in the Senate did not refer the matter to the appropriate Senate Standing Committee for an open investigation in line with the extant Rules of the Senate.

The Senate President’s involvement in this scandal raises serious concerns about the integrity of the Senate and its ability to hold its members accountable for their actions.

The PDP has called for an independent investigation into the budget padding allegation and urged Akpabio to clear his name at the EFCC over the alleged looting of N108 billion and N86 billion under his watch as Governor of Akwa Ibom State and Minister of Niger Delta Affairs respectively.

This scandal has brought to light the alleged gross misconduct and criminal betrayal of public trust by prominent APC officials in the National Assembly and a top official in the Presidency.

It is crucial that the Senate leadership takes immediate action to restore the public’s trust in the institution and ensure that those responsible for any wrongdoing are held accountable.
